LETTER FROM THE SHOW COMMITTEE
Transcribed from the New York Book Show 2009 Catalog (distributed March 24, 2009)

WELCOME TO THE TWENTY-FOURTH ANNUAL NEW YORK BOOK SHOW! We gather annually in March to honor the nest designed and manufactured books of the previous year.

Our organization is always evolving, and we have made a few changes to the show. We added business books as a new category. We also invited many notable independent and university presses across the country to participate for the first time, which they did in record numbers.

Thank you to all the judges who took the time to choose the best books, jackets and covers from a huge number of entries. It is not an easy task, but we hope it was a joyfull experience.

The evening is the culmination of a year-long effort. As usual, our show was made possible by all the  generous donations of time, effort and money by all the participants - designers, manufacturers, publishing houses, and the Book Show committee members.

Our grateful appreciation to each Book Show committee member whose dedication throughout the year makes this event such a success.

Again, thank you all for work well done.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to the twenty-fourth annual New York Book Show!

It is a pleasure to once again return to the majestic and dramatic Grand Ballroom at the Manhattan Center. The books displayed throughout the room and within these pages have been selected from more than 800 entries from book publishers and printers, large and small, throughout North America. This year’s selections came from the largest pool of entrants ever and included 40 first-time contributors.

For many of us in The Bookbinders’ Guild of New York, including myself, the New York Book Show is the highest point of our seasonal calendar. Each year the New York Book Show is a demonstration of the care and creativity of the producers of great books, from the type on the page, to the paper they are printed on, to the ideas they represent. It is an affirmation of the vitality of a technology first invented in the 1450’s and a celebration of the multifarious permutations of the book within the community that has the greatest stake in its continued success. This year is no exception.  I am proud to say that continuing with tradition, all of the entries, both winners and non-winners alike are donated to our good friends at the Literacy Assistance Center of New York.

Many donors make the New York Book Show possible. Within these pages you’ll find the names of the various Book Show committee members who volunteered their time and energy. You’ll also find the names of corporate sponsors who, in a difficult economy, have provided much needed financial support and donations in-kind. Special commendation goes to Random House who generously provided us with much needed space throughout the planning and production of the Show. Leadership is essential and this year’s Show would not have been possible without the dedication of co-chairs Adriana Coada and Issy Stinnette. They continued to build on innovations of the past few years, further streamlining the entry process, data-collection, and on-line presence, and added a ‘Best in Show’ category chosen by the Show attendees, to name just a few highlights. On behalf of my colleagues on the Executive Committee, to all of those who made this year’s New York Book Show possible, I say thank you, thank you, thank you.

Lastly, the Guild’s greatest asset is its membership. The Guild is a non-profit wholly volunteer organization, unique of its kind, and your membership dollars go a long way to covering basic operating expenses and making events like the monthly programs, Basically Books, plant trips, Barge Bash, and the New York Book Show possible. If you are not already a member, I encourage you to join on our website.www.bookbindersguild.org

We look forward to seeing you again next year at the 25th Annual  New York Book Show.

Sincerely

Eric I. Schwartz, Ph.D.
President
The Bookbinders' Guild of New York
